As you know, your election is not just a private victory and the fulfilment of a personal ambition, but it is most importantly a call to national service and duty by your dear countrty. I must also commend the peaceful and democratic manner you conducted the elections of your principal officers and how you managed the aftermath of the fallout from the controversial way the Senate President and his Deputy, as well as the Speaker and his Deputy,  pulled some veritably mysterious stunts to out-manoeuvre other gladiators. I’m a firm believer in, and an ardent advocate for, an Independent Legislature that is totally unencumbered by subterranean forces. The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has set up a judicial commission of inquiry to investigate the immediate past administration of Mr. Rotimi Amaechi over the alleged sale of valued assets belonging to the state. The Judicial Commission of Inquiry, which was inaugurated at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Friday, has Justice George Omereji as its chairman and four other members. Inaugurating the commission, Wike specifically charged it to investigate the sale of the 150 Megawatts gas turbine in Omoku, Adam 360 MW Gas Turbine, Trans-Amadi 136 MW gas turbine and the 75 MW gas turbine in Eleme. President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that nine of the VIP transport aircraft under the presidential fleet should be sold. According to THISDAY,the presidential fleet, which are registered as Nigerian Air Force aircraft, is one of the largest in Africa and the third largest in Nigeria after Arik Air and Aerocontractors. According to an aviation source, who is aware of the directive to sell the aircraft, the presidency has a number of serviceable and unserviceable aircraft that need to be disposed of in order to reduce the amount spent by the federal government for aircraft maintenance annually. “Nine, which still have market value, are to be sold immediately to reduce maintenance costs,” he said. For years, the federal government has spent over N12 billion annually for the maintenance of the presidential fleet. Governor Nyesom Wike is set to sack 13,000 workers employed by his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi. This comes as Rivers House of Assembly passed a resolution empowering the Governor to sack the board of the State Civil Service Commission accusing them of breaching the rules and illegally employing workers into the state Service. The Rivers lawmakers passed the resolution on Tuesday after grilling the Chairman of the Service Commission, Mr Ngo Martins Yellowe on the floor of the House based on petitions accusing the Commission of not passing through due process before employing workers in past three years. Yellowe, however, told lawmakers that the Commission under his leadership obeyed the constitution and laws guiding employment into the service. A 51 year old man and his gang members reportedly  raped a female member of NYSC to death. The prosecutor of the Kwara State Police Command, Mr. Matthew Ologbon, has informed an Ilorin Magistrate’s Court, that Miss Yetunde Idowu was raped to death by a 51-year-old man, Abdullahi Tanko, and his gang members. PUNCH Metro reports that, Idowu’ corpse was found at the Ilorin GRA.The police prosecutor told the court that on May 23, at about 12pm, the police found Idowu in a pool of blood.  Ologbon told the court that investigation by the police revealed that Tanko and his collaborators, now at large, tricked Idowu from her residence to Fate Road, where they raped her to death.He added that Tanko and his gang members raped the deceased inside their car. The newly sworn in members of the National Assembly will smile home with a whooping N8.64 billion as wardrobe allowance next week, it was learnt last night. The sum is aside other allowances such as furniture, housing and vehicle, which the lawmakers are entitled to. It was also learnt that the management of the National Assembly is currently allocating offices to the 469 federal lawmakers in both chambers ahead of their resumption on June 23 from the two-week recess that they embarked on June 10. The N8.64 billion wardrobe allowance translates to N17.5 million for each of the 360 members of the House of Representatives and N21.5 million for each of the 109 senators. While the wardrobe allowance, just like the furniture and vehicle allowances, will cover the entire four-year tenure of the 469 federal lawmakers, their housing allowances are paid on a yearly basis.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has again filed fresh charges against former governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva at the Federal High Court, Abuja. Justice Ahmed Mohammed (of the Federal High Court, Abuja) had on June 10 dismissed one of the two charges earlier brought against him and some others by the EFCC on the ground that it amounted to an abuse of court process. However, EFCC disagreed with the judgment on the grounds that it was premature as the accused persons had not taken any plea before the court. Earlier on June 1, Justice Evoh Chukwu (also of the Federal High Court, Abuja) struck out the other charge upon EFCC's application for withdrawal. In the fresh 50-count charge filed on Friday, Sylva is charged alongside Francis Okokuro, Gbenga Balogun and Samuel Ogbuku. It has been revealed that ,one of the Central Bank of Nigeria staff made N30m in one deal..During the proceedings at the Federal High Court, Ibadan the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday told Justice Adeyinka Faaji, that some of the accused persons in the N8bn mutilated currency fraud confessed to committing the offence during investigation. The lead counsel for the EFCC, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), during the continuation of the suit in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, specifically told the court that one of the accused, Mrs. Olunike Esther Afolabi, confessed to making N30m in one of the deals. He also told the court how one of the accused persons, Oni Dolapo, conspired to defraud the Central Bank of Nigeria of N1.3bn under the pretext that the sum in mutilated notes, which came from Wema Bank, was meant to be destroyed. The Christian Association of Nigeria has appealed to church leaders in Osun State to rally food aid and money to assist Osun State civil servants who are going through hardship because of the delay in the payment of their salaries for the past seven months. The Chairman of CAN in Osun State, Rev. Elisha Ogundiya, said this in an interview with journalists in Osogbo on Tuesday, after the meeting of the executives of CAN in the state. Ogundiya said that churches should go beyond feeding their congregations with spiritual food, especially at this time but should also rally round to offer them succour. Rivers State newly sworn-in Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike through the help of the State Police has recovered 10 vehicles allegedly stolen by some officials of the immediate past administration. Vehicles recovered are one Coaster bus, two Nissan Urvan buses, two Higer vehicles, one Land Cruiser, one Toyota Hilux Pick-up, one Peugeot 607 Saloon car and two Peugeot 406 cars. The Governor, who had earlier taken leading Rivers stakeholders around the Government house to see the points where facilities in Government House were either looted or vandalised, said recovering of State properties will be a continuous exercise. The police also said they acted on information that some suspected vehicles belonging to the Rivers State Government were seen parked in unauthorised yards.
